Artist Statement

Line and Space

The main focus of my work is the various qualities of space. Space is not seen as a continuum but as a sample of fields or zones marked by substantial and virtual lines.

Space stretches, it is dense, it eludes, it can be fluid or it appears open and inviting. It is a ‘mental space’, which means inner constructions and subjective representations.

After having focused first on architecture and then on cartography, my recent works deal with the affiliation of landscape and architectural structure.

The phenomenon ‘space’ for me is not describable but in a poetical sense.

Buildings and Grounds is a series of 60 works on paper showing lines, nets and grids arranged in layers, creating complex structures. One can think of seismographic diagrams, geographic and architectural structures which seem to be shown from a bird’s-eye-view. Scientific and technical aspects are associated. One can discover epicentres, elevations, cross-sections and profiles. Buildings and Grounds is about space, about territories and frontiers. It is talking about the absurdity or non-absurdity of measuring and structuring the complex.

The “Kindertotenlieder” are poems of Friedrich Rückert, a famous german 19th century orientalist and poet. The “Kindertotenlieder” is “the greatest lamentation for the dead in the world’s literature”. It is timeless in its emotional concerns, as well as very modern in its formal decisions, the circularity and the medial reflection.
My works on paper are taking the “Kindertotenlieder” as occasion to formulate the motiv of death and mourning. The water-colors are not illustrating the poems, but they are inspired by the poetical metaphors and personal experience.
