Artist Statement
All series ongoing.
ASB is a body of work based initially on my father’s brain scans following his death of Alzheimer’s disease. With time the work came to be more about a larger questioning of what contains consciousness, where we locate it and how we picture it.
INDEX is a series of several hundred images repeating (20 or so) multiple themes (organic, geometric, vegetal, comic, etc) to be arranged irregularly but with attention to rhythm and repetition on a large wall.
LOCKE’S SOCK Text: Sometime ago while emptying paint from a brush at the end of the day I made an L-shaped mark that surprised me by looking like a sock. I thought almost immediately of “John Locke’s Sock”, a concept about which I had made an entry in a notebook some years earlier. The idea, as I understood it, was that if one continuously mended holes in a sock one would eventually replace all the original yarn, raising the question: Is it still the same sock? The concept is analogous to questions regarding identity and continuity in the human body and mind. How does memory weave together a stable sense of self, an enduring thread of identity from moment to moment? As physical bodies we are in constant flux, replacing cells, molecules, even atoms. Perhaps it is only in this very act of perpetual renewal that we ceaselessly reaffirm the necessary illusion of fixity for our enduring existence.
Thinking I might generate a series of paintings around the idea I went looking for the precise source. But to my befuddlement I have been unable to locate any reference to a sock example in the philosophical literature. I contacted several scholars who could not confirm Locke (or anyone else for that matter) as the source of the example, although they agreed it was in keeping with interests of the British empiricist. But where had I encountered this concept? As I’ve embarked on the series of paintings the question of the missing sock persists, as if it were the project’s phantom limb.
