Artist Statement
When I began using water as a component in my work, I could feel the tug of it, like an undertow. Its movement and pressure, and the manner in which it pushes and pulls immersed figures, describes an inner struggle as well as the relationship between internal elements and external boundaries. I am interested in the tension between the figure’s form, its deconstruction, and the ambiguous boundaries between the two.

The viscosity of the medium is also a primary concern for me. When composing, I think of the picture plane in almost completely abstract terms. It is the visceral nature of things that I am after, using thicker areas of graphite pigment built up and laid down next to more transparent passages. While I draw I am always reminded that the work has a life of its own. I aim for spontaneity in the process, trying to intuitively sense when its time to step back and leave it alone.
