Artist Statement

I create mixed-media drawing installations, based on my observations of our built environment. I usually create these installations on a large – almost architectural – scale, creating artworks, which respond to the sites in which they are installed.

As part of my working process, I also create a variety of studies in order to work out ideas that arise during my working process. In this way, my smaller drawings are independent works, often exploring tangents which arise from my major works.

My most recent work originates from observational drawings of architecture, whose isolated features I use to construct my own abstract compositions. My working process involves collaging elements in different combinations: making and un-making, constructing then de-constructing them, in order to disrupt the representational aspects of the drawing. Rather than just presenting a literal reading of the original subject matter, my intention is to encourage viewers to see new, complex spaces created in my work and to play with their perceptions of constructed space.

Further work can be seen at my website www.cathbrophy.com; daily updates from my one-year sketchbook project and other studio projects at https://studioopendoor.wordpress.com; recent works exhibited at Galler-li Curating Space in Winterthur at https://www.facebook.com/Galler-li-818543398243061 and my art research images on Instagram @breadbutteredbothsides.
