Artist Statement

Appealing to the senses and emotionally evocative, my work consists of: wax floral relief carvings, large-scale floral paper cut-outs, and drawings of exotic fowl.  When collectively viewed, the works’ reference for traditional craftsmanship, Dutch still life paintings, and botanicals comes forth.

Life, death, and implicit sexuality serve as themes. The physical act of carving the wax blends harshness with malleable beauty. From the wax’s pristine surface I pull out forms using dramatic incisions, pushing the material to its limits of sustainability. The same applies to my paper cut-outs, whose overgrown and entangled density is achieved through a process of layering intricate botanical silhouettes. The vulnerability of these two media coupled with the temporal nature of the subject matter, heighten the relationship between the physicality of the works and the viewers’ own corporeality, and encapsulate the liminal state between life and death.

In the exotic fowl series, the birds selected are males in their mating prime. They display a variety of decorative embellishments used to demonstrate sexual prowess, drawing attention to themselves through their seductive and exaggerated natural adornments. With the historical tradition of cocks being associated with a masculine sexual nature, the drawings portray the birds as characters of seduction. Images of great opulence that present the subject at its most glorious and lush, yet simultaneously suggest impending demise.
