Artist Statement
My work is about personal identity and nonverbal communication. In ancient Greek, ‘persona-lity’ has a dramatic meaning: the ‘mask’. We wear it wherever we go as we present ourselves to ourselves and to others. Our everyday presentation and who we ‘really’ are, are entangled and thus raises questions: where ends the ‘mask’ and where starts the ‘real’ person?

I’m fascinated by how humans are able to see themselves as a symbolic personage and how they communicate this to the world. A basic duality in human life exists between the physical world of objects and a symbolic world of human meaning. In our thoughts and ideas we create our own, unique world, that often is in conflict with  instincts, fears, desires and denial: our impotence, the knowledge of our mortality which lies below. nonverbal communication is a an important tool in establishing and maintaining this symbolic world. In my work I focus on the relationship between appearance and deeper emotions.

I’m attracted to common or everyday imagery and the aesthetics of folkart. I look for simplicity, a slightly off-composition and clumsy design. I want to create the feeling that it wrings, that it doesn’t really fits, but it still looks ‘real’. I don’t want to exaggerate, because the work would than remain a caricature and that’s not what I’m looking for. The lines alternate between insecure and elegant, some drawings have a more rigid quality and remind of naive art. I want to make visible a certain artlessness and openness.
