Artist Statement
I seize images out of a cute prison of denial and allow them to cease masquerading as something flawless and perfect.  I create vignettes comprised of popular imagery extracted from estranged realms such as soft porn and cartoons for children. My drawings often start with an attraction to a singular image and the desire to kidnap it out of its vehicle of pure seduction. I displace idealized, overly simplified representations of feminine perfection and juvenile innocence into confounded dysfunctional families, reflecting and exploring the violent complexity of reality.  In my case, reality means motherhood.  I simultaneously lust over and despise the imagery I draw from.  I feel it has so much stupid power that I must contemplate both its stupidity and its power. These pin-ups from the seventies, these vintage cartoons of kittens and pies, these contemporary fashion models, Victorian houses, Victoria's secret, they all represent something I covet and something I fear.
