Artist Statement
I register my environment by painting and drawing interiors and exteriors.
As the paintings are build up out of many layers thin paint, an atmospheric depth arises. Using these thin layers of paint over each other, leads to a large variety of shades of the colour black. Due to this and because of the selective lighting my work is characterised by a melancholic undertone. When producing the drawings and paintings I use images from papers, magazines, internet, self made photo's and impressions and memories.

I am fascinated by fragile happiness. One can see this in my work; the spaces are beautiful but disturbing. The happiness and beauty of the environment in my paintings are present but also the vulnerability and the pain. A feeling that everything is temporal. The exteriors often show the urban scenery as I experience it; a detached and threatening modern city. The interiors, for instance the living room of someone’s house, are more intimate. Everything indicates that someone just has or could have been here, but the surrounding is definitely empty and deserted.
