Artist Statement

(...) Peculiar things and figures have escaped from a dimension between dream and reality, invading the exhibition room to temporarily abide here in a playful performance. For his drawing installations, Jörg Mandernach takes up the atmosphere of the respective site, but then alters it fundamentally in an act of poetic creation. Drawings and adhesive tapes extending over traditional picture formats and the surfaces of walls, floors, and ceilings along with objects distributed in the room are the components of what is like a scenic intervention.

(...)Jörg Mandernach describes his relation to reality as a continuous "process of metabolism" in which diary-like sketch snippets and notes on personal experiences and impressions are interwoven with found objects from the media: cinema, opera, television magazines, comics, and literature. High and low, treasure and trash, the private and the public fuse and, as catalysts, bring forth a reality in its own right. The various levels of experience thereby stand in a relationship of continuous exchange. In the course of processing, symbolic or iconographic relations emerge, interlocking personal, societal, and cultural-historical aspects and opening up expanded on which to interpret them. The chosen themes are played through in variations and brought together in work groups. These in turn are the motific starting point for room stagings that unfold ever anew, like musical improvisations. Jörg Mandernach’s drawing installations thus flow through various spatio-temporal levels.

Individual motifs thereby fall apart into cryptic fragments that then reassemble into figures and objects and can be identified only from a very specific angle. Depending on the respective position of the viewer, the room staging reconfigures itself, continually anew. Jörg Mandernach sets an interactive game in operation that takes on a dramaturgical quality by means of the emergence and disappearance of things, the appearance and exiting of figurations. (…)
