Artist Statement

(excerpted from the full statement)

In my work I create objects that blend the anatomies of different species. Dirt and roots are elements of an ecosystem that have properties essential to the land, as flesh and veins are synergistic to the role of the human body. By combining plant, animal and human elements, I highlight the similarities between these different natural forms while transmuting their characteristics.

This manipulation redefines an object's presence and generates curiosity about the function and purpose of its altered state. These altered states exist in physical and conceptual form. As genetic code can define the shape of an individual's nose, a chain of conditioned thoughts can conjure someone's speech impediment. These foundations derive from a process: it is through process that energy is provoked, gathered and assembled into a composition. Once exposed to an environment, this composition continues to evolve.

These concepts have manifested themselves in hybrid forms I call Floragrafts. My art is a representation of these forms in drawing, sculpture, photography and narrative writing. My current investigations of the Floragrafts involve the creation of a taxonomic chart outlining Floragraft species and the mapping of their internal anatomy and physiology. Additional to this research is the documentation of viruses and bacteria, illustrating the susceptibility of this invented species, and the follies and revelations of my artificial selection within the framework of something created from natural elements.
