Artist Statement

'Kate Wilson's drawings bear a resemblance to calligraphy both in appearance and intent. The sheer volume of small-scale drawings that she has produced over the years reflects an almost daily meditation of applying black ink to paper. Wilson then uses these drawings as preliminary studies for large-scale wall installations. Each drawing features shapes intended to be read as singular, self-contained forms. When reproduced in large scale, they appear like planetary bodies revolving around each other on white space. Just as calligraphy is both an art form and a language, Wilson's whirlwinds of brush strokes are what she refers to as a "lexicon of plausible catastrophic imagery: serious yet wry." derived from direct and indirect observation'
