Artist Statement
I take the view that, as a contemporary artist who paints, I have a tourist’s eye. The tourist-painter, full of postmodern romanticism for the past and a desire to visit important historic sites, collects souvenirs in the hopes of making something new. Drawing is a way of collecting souvenirs.

A recent print and collage project, "Graveyards & Parking Lots," makes use of some literal souvenirs I've been collecting for years: discarded magazines, postcards, and photos from books found in thrift stores. Photo-silkscreen, hand cut stencils, and drawings pushed through the silkscreen are collaged with the found photos. I wanted to combine and conflate the two places, both banal and fantastic, and to highlight each as a site of mischief, spirituality, existential pause, and mirth.

The formal framework of my paintings lies in combining and contrasting drawing and painting languages. Cartooning and architectural rendering are fused with drips, brushstrokes, and pools of paint to construct surreally familiar landscapes. A splash of paint serves as a foil to the space implied by linear perspective. I combine exaggeratedly thick and thin passages of paint, seeking applications that would traditionally seem to contradict an illusion. The illustrative passages suggest a story, but most often a painting event completes the narrative equation and becomes the object of the tourist’s gaze.
