Artist Statement

Evoking the way in which art imitates nature I reproduce images that are typical of natural environments while simultaneously providing an escape from them. I’m particularly interested in changing the visual look of natural forms so they are still recognizable, but obtain a new quality that resembles a unique hybrid between nature and human design. I want to transmit a feeling that an illusion is taking place in my work, where the representation of a pleasurable space based on the natural world sucks the viewer in to a realm of unknown origin.Simon Schama says in Landscape and Memory, “Landscape is as much a work of the mind and memory as it is rocks and scenery.”

My paintings depict an intermediate state that is not clearly defined and create an idealized habitat that blurs the line between actual and illusionistic space. Ultimately, what these images reveal is not a specific place, as much as a moment or a constellation of moments. Swirls of foliage and flowers on inky dark backgrounds create a vortex that draws the viewer into a cycle of pleasure and decay. Explosive bursts from an unknown source leave a colorful trail that results in a vivid afterimage. The compositions are often inspired by the visual language of cartoons, especially Japanese manga, with the shorthand way they portray movement using motion lines and waves of energy.

My installations create an atmosphere where the viewer can glimpse the outlines of another world beneath the surface. A palpable tension exists between sound and vision, real and artificial, and dream and loneliness to provide private moments and create a compelling relationship between the artificial and the organic.
