Artist Statement
My work seeks to investigate the relationship of lived experience to language, modes of representation, and social/cultural economies of interaction. Spanning a range of media - from works on paper and projects with text to photography and video - it often focuses on an encounter between a person and a particular task, physical space, or a set of objects.

I am interested in the discomforting or uncertain aspects of lived experience - states such as doubt, restlessness, stuckness and hesitation. Drawn to a paradox, I often seek to stage disappearances, absences, concealments - the vanishing of traces, the passing of time, the ephemerality of presence.

Typically, my practice tends to combine a systematic, almost rule-based approach with the performative processes of improvisation, repetition, re-doing. Exploiting the tension between my own provisional frameworks and restrictions on the one side, and live play on the other, the projects frequently adopt a form of a catalogue or a series. Each series becomes a map of possibilities, compiling the multiple attempts at the same simple image or an activity. The work playfully uses strategies often deemed negative or ‘wrong’ - repeated mistakes, obsessiveness, stupidity in order to explore breakdowns of systems, impossible tasks, failures, conflicting desires.

Evident across the different media is my preoccupation with frames and containers - whether it’s looking at frames as restrictions of possibilities, or as actual physical borders - boundaries of physical space, of objects, and of the page. Approaching body as an element of space, as object, the work explores ways to re-imagine spatial relations - both in the physical world and on the page, resulting in images and documents that are at once humorous and subtly uncanny.
