Artist Statement

Let’s think, for an instant, about romantic relationships. The most compelling aspect about having someone in your life, in my opinion, is that the other is available for you to travel upon physically, emotionally and intellectually. You’re allowed to touch everywhere, to inquire everywhere. Permission is granted for you to go in all the rooms, all the cracks and nooks, even in the dark corners. That’s what a relationship is; it’s inviting a person to explore your terrain.

Making artwork is that way for me. I’m constructing it, yes, but once there’s something in front of me I have an obligation––no, a desire–– to go all over it. The practice is driven by curiosity and a sense of engagement; attentiveness is a required state and the pace is slow. The work is a meeting point, an offer, a permission to enter.
