Artist Statement

My recent drawings depict rural environments and commonplace objects that arise out of observation, invention, and memory. Using a straightforward pictorial language of modest means, my paintings are deceptively simple and elliptical in meaning. Touching on themes such as impermanence and alienation, my subjects occupy the ambiguous terrain between what is nature and what is human. I see my work as being in a dialogue with American Regionalism and its preoccupation with authenticity, home, and spirituality.

The imagery of my paintings is simultaneously distilled from a direct optical experience as well as a manipulation of the cliches, symbols, and conventions that are often associated with nature and landscape. The subjects range between studies of the minute interactions of random scatological debris such as dead leaves, dirt, and rocks to broader landscape scenes of lakes and groves. These scenes are painted with a sense of urgency and spontaneity, although this boldness is often tempered with an intentional rigidity and emotional reticence. They are balanced and executed confidently, yet they also verge on being clumsy and chaotic, self-aware of their own contradictory nature. What results is a precarious moment charged by the pathos of something flawed and teetering on the brink of failure.

Throughout my work there is an awareness of the present moment mixed with a somber meditation on the past. The weight of the past is encountered though the abandoned residue of humanity: defunct machines and objects that are now useless, deteriorating and returning to dust. It is a reflection of the tragic and sublime nature of mortality, of physical and psychological human frailty. Yet there is also a freedom found in detachment and solitude in the overgrown woods, as well as a positive energy found in the endless growth and life cycles of nature. I paint places in which there is an intertwining of living and decaying matter, of forms coming into being and disappearing.
