Artist Statement

In my most recent work, I depict time as ruination or artifact. I examine the bodily characteristics of our built environment.  Structures of buildings, their skin and support, appear and disappear or are uncovered from the sediments of archeological layers. Rejecting the notion of ruin as nostalgia, I use architecture to diagram incompleteness or failure to capture moments in their entirety.  This imagery describes the unearthing of the past and the imperfect state of memory but also the possibility of viewing this fragmentation as openness to the future. My etchings and sculptures reference the distinction between the organic and the inorganic and the different processes they undergo.

The act of drawing becomes a way to map how to move through these imaginary spaces, whether they are sculptural or on paper.  The three-dimensional works contain the grit and physicality of an urban environment as well as the slow, physical aging of geological forms.  My structures are made from raw materials such as handmade paper, wire, wood or steel.  These fragile, often ephemeral constructions are seen as events, still-occurring.  The works on paper have a strong diagrammatic as well as ancient quality.  Marks and scratches, like bits of dust, build in density to create the contours of simplistic architecture or land mounds. Color acts as a temporal shift, moving from one moment to another.  These works are performative in their creation due to the necessary improvisational process of the printing.  The drypoint/ etching plates are constructed without test prints over several months and are only printed once a year on a 10’ press that accommodates the large plates.  The process of printing the image for the first time and using several layers allows the image to slowly emerge from its atmosphere.
