As a sixth generation West Virginian, I have witnessed at first hand the ravage of my family and homeland and the unthinking obliteration of a culture, as the mountains have been blown up, scraped off, discarded, flooded and poisoned while my people are crushed in mine-falls, choked with dust, riddled with cancer and derided as fools too stupid to know any better. Deciding how to give voice to, as well as come to terms with this my legacy in deep Appalachia has been at my works core and fueled a career that now spans more than thirty-five years. By using the tools of drawing and painting coupled with a life long dedication to raw and honest mark making, I aim for hard landscapes, that are split asunder, cleaved by force, tormented and lacerated by ‘coal-smeared wounds’, carving out rocky chambers where I can speak from the heart about things that are important, personal and common as dirt. I feel both anger and sadness about the loss and destruction of what I still regard as my home. A refugee’s yearning, the pull of the mountains, both run through my veins like creek water and coal dust. The destruction by extreme greed of West Virginia, although perpetrated in full view over many generations, is not a subject about which much is heard in contemporary fine art. My deep desire to speak up through the power of my drawing and painting is an ongoing effort to change that.
