Artist Statement

I am interested in making drawings and paintings where the illusion of form and space are created with simple, seemingly effortless gestures. I use various kinds of mark making including brush strokes, thick sweeps of paint, washes, and scraping into paint, and at times I integrate flat shapes using stickers and masking tape as stencils.

My subject matter is found in my everyday surroundings, and includes the sheets on my bed, my daughter's hair, piles of clothing, and other domestic matter. I am especially attracted to material that lends itself to abstraction. In my representations of fabric, I use stickers and tape to mask off areas as flat pattern and then work over the pattern with transparent washes to create the illusion of folds.

In a recent site specific wall painting, I included a video documenting the making of the mural. The video revealed the process of my work, consequently demystifying the techniques in which I create illusion.
