Artist Statement

I am interested in art´s possibility to bring challenging or uncomfortable issues closer. This is driving force behind my practice. I work process-and project based using a range of stragegies. The starting point is specific occurrences - political, social or personal. By gathering traces - my own, others, found, staged - my aim is to translate the specific into visual, tactile and reflective works.

Cruelty Has a Human Heart explores evilness through text, colors, stitches and collaboration. Quotes on evilness, from a wide range of sources, are  handwritten and stitched on canvas pieces in workshops, They are installed overlapping, inviting the viewer to lift to read quotes underneath.

Desconocida Unknown Ukjent is a relational project. I use needle, thread and stitching nametags in workshops as a tool to bring theme of abuse and murder of women closer.

Fences explores borders through combination of performance, photo documentation and text. At 115 sites globally I have left a stitched red trace on fences. I never ask for permission. Each place is chosen for a reason - political, historical or personal. The trace is documented with photo and derives a text.

65 299 Knots - A Pain Registry starts from a personal story. In 2009 I had to go through a thorough surgery causing pain and long recovery time. I used the situation to research pain - a daily objective study knotting knots in thin silk thread. The project lasted 134 weeks.

Restrained Traces I still have physical limitations that I daily defy. I explore what traces confronting a physical limitation can give and challenge it on paper with charcoal in my hand.

Weekly postcards to Miri is a collaboration with artist Miri Nishri, Tel Aviv, Israel. Each week we send each other a “summary”postcard. The dialogue becomes interesting because of where we live. In safe Norway I can focus on “internal” challenges, whereas Miri´s focus are external, based on her government´s newest approaches and the worlds responses.
