Artist Statement
One of the main and motivating factors in creating and developing the use of lines in my work has been the unveiling of a desire for manifestation of unity.  Following an urge against segmentation of the surface into isolated geographies of color and content, I set out to create a method of pictorial depiction which conveys this idea of unity regardless of content.  Even though at first glance the subjects in my work seem isolated from their surroundings, upon closer inspection it is revealed that all areas of each work are connected together by the underlying solid color of the background.  The segmentation of both color and content is at once rejected by this shared geography. A playful attempt at monism, these figurative works explore representation of form midway between completion and dissolution. Regardless of content, I find that my work finds its roots in my cultural heritage. In creating and developing this linear style of painting, some of my continual inspirations have been Persian calligraphy, weaving patterns of carpets, tile works and different kinds of puzzles.  Even though the sources of most of my subjects are external, my work is often an attempt for the union of the internal.
