Artist Statement

Fourth

These drawings envision space beyond three dimensions. The writings and models of Alicia Boole Stott and Charles H. Hinton were the starting point for this project. They were 19th century mathematicians who visualized forms existing in dimensions beyond our own.  I’ve imbued the drawings with qualities that the scholars attributed to our sense of the fourth dimension.

The works are sequenced, like mathematical equations. Folding, collapsing, shifting—the space moves in impossible ways. I build the pictures by accumulating many small stripes, which simultaneously create and demolish form. Motion is created both visually, through line and stripe, and physically through the vibration of surprising color combinations.

The black and white work is the inverse of the color.  These drawings immerse the viewer in a constricted visual field.  Color seeping into the strident black and white world creates an analogy of another dimension.

My aim is to create a new experience both as a visual work of art, and as the apprehension of dimensions that are theoretically possible, but never witnessed.
