Artist Statement
Jessica Langley’s work examines her relationship to nature through various media and form, looking at the experience of nature and landscape as inspiration, ritual, and subject of desire. Familiar, iconic, and spiritual representations of nature, land, and animals repeatedly appear. Animals decompose, a cat aura appears out of a black abyss, and individual rocks are rendered scientifically. She simultaneously monumentalizes her subjects and contemplates the idealism of nature. Using spartan imagery Jessica’s work attempts to expose the obvious – the continual search for purity in nature is an absurdly spiritual and mythical goal.

In recent works Jessica envisions a world that is being smothered out. An abstract form runs throughout, appearing as a black blob, a gestural mark, or an enveloping slime, continually destroying her images of landscape. Jessica’s narrative unfolds in three parts: “What Stranger Things,” “Search and Explore,” and “I Don’t Know”, where each element begins to tell the story involving idealized nature photography, a path of destruction, and impending doom

Previous works emphasize disintegration and hybridization of images, both in terms of subject matter, as well as technique. The effect lends itself to the discussion of contemporary fears about environment and illustrates the tension between conscious concern and escapism.
