Artist Statement

Inspired by the accessibility, positivity and aesthetics of decorative traditions of art making, I construct my own synthesis of decorative and pictorial space. In my drawings, I explore symbolic narratives relating to a variety of life experiences though the human figure is sometimes absent. Themes of home, precariousness, time passing, death, decay and growth unfold in settings of quiet reverie, encouraging multiple interpretations without resolving into a linear or singular story. My drawings depicting the human figure show men, women and children reclining with vegetation growing out of their bodies. Butterflies or moths flit through the scene landing where they may. The figures are in an ambiguous condition, perhaps sleeping, dreaming, hibernating or expiring. Plant growth bursts forth as if some new force is awakening from bodies caught in a semi-dormant state of chrysalis. With their dreamlike and impossible scenarios of hybridized life, these images

become a metaphor for life's moments of change and transition.
