Artist Statement

Drawing offers an opportunity to synthesize the observed and the imagined. My invented subjects are both object and organism. They are simultaneously plant and animal, male and female, animate and inanimate. The textures in my drawings come from direct encounters with nature, natural materials and animal husbandry: plants and animal parts, sheep wool and felting processes, grooming tools I’ve seen in horse barns. The technique employed evokes biological illustration in level of description and compositional isolation.

Many of my drawings present the body as vulnerable organism, under the effect of its own biological problems and corrective exterior impositions. I have long been fascinated by the use of drawing for scientific purposes. The Surrealists, with their interest in ambiguous categories of matter, created fetish objects that blended high art with the commodity. These drawings blend functional tools with living, organic surfaces suggestive of tissue, hair, fur or cotton wadding.
