Artist Statement

The aesthetic line quality of children's coloring books merge with silhouetted figures taken from Disney films to produce eerily alluring abstract scenes on Mylar and paper. I view these sources as ready made objects, in which I engage in a form of play in order to form my images. In the vein of the "disneyfied" fairytale, I too am appropriating existing narratives. Reinterpreted images drawn from iconic characters like Pinocchio, Astro Boy, Bambi and Peter Pan frolic gaily through non-photo-baby blue compositions of cartoon objects, spaces, and historical landscapes; playing out narratives that explore the emotional, sexual, and psychological complexities of the colonial history.

My preoccupation with the past is informed by my mainland Puerto Rican identity and a history of the island where school children were subjected to deculturlization practices conducted by the U.S. This duality between the personal and the historical are at the basis of all my work. In my drawings the child is the object of a performance. He is exposed to, and the embodiment of, the interchange of cultural historical forces; a body that is imprinted by a source of history that is made up of a series of symbiotic relationships.
