Artist Statement

These drawings are part of a group of 34 “talking self-portraits” completed between 2011 and 2013.  The number refers to my age at the time the project was completed, which I considered a natural stopping-point.    Each mixed-media drawing depicts me, shown from the neck-up, recognizable only by the graphically rendered hair.  The “talking” is indicated by the familiar silhouette of the text bubble that issues from where my mouth would be.  Both my face and speech have been replaced by a stable of surrogate objects, patterns, and abstract gestures - the monologue is visual. The expectation that a self-portrait will reveal something of the inner-life of the artist is not only subverted, but by denying the viewer a human face to interpret and words to read.  I present a compound metaphor to decipher: the juxtaposition of the disparate objects of which the portrait and speech are comprised.   The drawings highlight how we create meaning from the clues we are given and point to the levels of interpretation that lead us to “understand” one another.
