Artist Statement

In approaching my work, I first adopt a series and allow it to bubble and gestate.

After my extensive research: three newspapers daily, topical books, television news 24/7 and even conversing with strangers about current events, I am ready to begin.

Putting pencil to paper without hesitation, without planning, my drawing emerges.  For me, the artistic process is one of discovery.

I believe the time is right to re-interpret and update the messages of the seven deadly sins – Envy, Sloth, Pride, Avarice, Greed, Lust and Anger and the seven classical virtues – Faith, Hope, Charity, Justice, Prudence, Fortitude, and Temperance in the “atmosphere” of today’s world.

This new series of drawings has been in the works for over three years.

When approaching the theme of the Seven Deadly Sins, I explored the difficult issues of war, politics, environmental chaos, and unconscionable cruelty.

Meditating on the Seven Classical Virtues, my hope is to remind us of our moral compass and our responsibility to others.

The drawings in this series are intended as a beacon in troubling times.

My hope is to challenge the viewer to listen to the “song of life”.
