Artist Statement

My colored pencil drawings deal with modern themes of uncertainty and longing within contemporary landscape. By pushing buildings and bridges to their breaking point, this allows elements of abstraction to blossom within their gestural and jovial forms.

The drawings are often inspired by collages created from a mixture of low-resolution print-outs of photographs taken by me or found through outside sources. The print outs are cut up, rearranged in an intuitive way, often attempting to make the picture appear whole again. They are then viewed under a loop, rather than through a projector’s lens. By doing this, the collage becomes a miniature universe and the foundation for the drawing. The multi-colored lines and bright smears (created by the poor quality of the print) on the images are incorporated into the drawings through abstraction and an organic line.

The resulting contemporary landscapes are made up from the detritus of confusion produced by trying to reassemble what has been cut up and destroyed. Often using Los Angeles as a subject, the landscapes careen through the precipice of failure and fantasy, possibility and dread, hope and failure, invention and destruction.
