Artist Statement

Annie Wildey is a painter and printmaker who lives in New York City and was born in the UK.   My current body of work is an exploration of a human experience, in a contemporary urban landscape – A personal attempt to find awe, wonder, and the sublime within the grime of 21st Century urban life. I hope to distill the essence of these initial personal encounters, and collectively arrive at an emotional portrait of a city at this specific time and place in a decade in which our environment is deteriorating.   Daily, I pass industrial utilitarian structures, overpasses, underpasses, spaces and places that are byproducts of urban commercial architecture, structural voids between supporting columns and girders - accidental environments. As an artist, I explore theses voids, and the emotional experience I have when I walk these places. Because of their banal, mundane nature, they might ordinarily go unnoticed. My work offers an opportunity to linger, to re-examine the place, to bring permanence and presence to fleeting moments of experience.    Beginning with personal photographs and sketches, I consider each piece a delicate conversation between the materials, the memory and myself. Each piece evolves organically and quickly to assimilate and capture the energy of the initial experience. I favor monotype as a printmaking technique. Its intuitive process-driven approach facilitates gesture, mark making and chance. I have begun to employ similar monotype techniques in painting, approaching the canvas as I would the plate. I work purposefully in a monochromatic palette to focus on the impact and the essence of the scene.
