Artist Statement
In the corner of my studio are three plastic bags filled with discarded drawings. I have accumulated them with the intention of recycling, but this trash has become a monument to the undoing of self-conjured art messes, experiments, and idea wrecks – my abandoned paper diary. I like this quote by curator and art historian Jordon Kantor: “Indeed drawing has always served as a fundamental means of trying to organize the complicated tangle of human experience, even, one might argue, from its earliest incarnation as scratches at the dirt of dawn of human culture.” Using random imagery in tandem with knotted forms, and various traces, stains, oil, lipgloss, loose graphite and raw pigment, these pieces represent something about the accumulated stuff of life – the lingering energy of memories, desires, struggle, exchange – all moving through a graphite system of digestion. This drawing system reflects the human impulse to organize our experiences in an ongoing desire to be both entangled and undone; to seek out meaning or dwell on it - in humor, grace or frenzy.
