Marie-Jeanne Hoffner’s drawings, wall drawings and architectural installations reflect a perception of space as map, living space and place for the body. Her translation of space is both physical and mental: on one hand, lines, plans and volumes propose a concrete experience of space, whereas on the other, semantic superimpositions and fake perspectives suggest an imaginary space that doubles our first apprehension of reality.
Hoffner’s research aims at transforming codes of the lived-in architecture.
The artist plays with the iconic simplicity of the house as immediate recognisable object, to distract one’s attention to its surrounding details.
In other works, Hoffner proceeds from the appropriation of the architectural grid and the urban development plan. More or less (2002) is a series of graduated sheets in which the artist cuts out city maps. The orthogonal grid contrasts with the more or less regular organic development of buildings in the space. Finally, the Correspondence series (2002) superpose a black lead tracing of a city map to a drawing of an anatomy fragment, inviting to read carnally the space.
Hoffner’s works can really exist in the scope of the exhibition space. From her wall drawings of maps, made in Sellotape or with a black lead, to her drawings of perspectives, made freehand with a pen on plastic covers, the artist invites to a reversed perception of the given space, and to the projection of another imaginary space in this room. The space can become an unfolded box onto the walls and the floor, to be refolded along a doted line (Elevations). It can also become reversible, for example in Blindly, a drawing from memory that duplicates the space.
The layout, the removal, the transparency and the folding are recurrent notions in Hoffner’s work. They allow her to approach architecture through its structural elements. This combination of formal rigour and physicality makes Marie-Jeanne Hoffner‘s work an example of a lively practice, both constructed and sensitive.
