These works are intricately detailed portraits of family and friends; artists and musicians. Drawn from a photographic source each subject faces away from the viewer so as to be drawn from the back, rendering a tripartite combination of textures - hair, skin and clothing.
The move from photograph to drawing depends on a painstaking accretion of marks over a long time-period. Subtle gestures and minutiae that mark our individuality and differentiate us are articulated in these works-as if believing that every mark makes a difference.
The drawings are life-size or bigger and isolate the subject in the centre of the paper with the effect that the subject is gazing at an expansive open space beyond. The larger works show the subjects looking at works of art, producing a double-entendre like effect that speaks about our viewing experience in galleries.
Unconscious physical gestures become topologies of thought. Meticulously drawn details speak about the relationship between the body and mind. Using a vantage point from which the subjects can never see themselves, these works remind us of the place of photography in contemporary image making.
