Artist Statement

"Symmetrical Procedures", begun in 2003, is an ongoing series of drawings constrained by four rules: 1) Square format  2) Graphite  3) Abstraction  4) Bilateral/mirror symmetry.

I work with limitations because it is conducive to experimentation, surprise, and invention. The minimal means allow me to observe incremental variations.  I chose abstraction to keep  images open to possibilities, while the symmetry brings resolution.  I'm balancing those divergent impulses, the desire for both freedom and discipline.  We know that the brain is a pattern seeking organism, but it thrives also on contrasts and change.  I edit in a poetic approach; towards refined, compressed, clear, and yet still mysterious images.

The drawings begin as "anything" and then become “something” as they crystallize into symmetries, like energy transforming from a liquid to solid state.   I’m inspired by the fact that on a molecular level all solids are actually crystalized forms, and that on a quantum level all things are in continual motion and unpredictable.  I’m also aware that my medium of graphite becomes a diamond under intense heat and pressure.

The dark drawings are all graphite with the white image appearing by means of the negative space. The light broken-line images, although they appear to be layers, are on one sheet of mylar. These are just a few examples of trajectories the work has taken.

The large wall drawings are applied directly to the wall with my fingers dipped in charcoal, using both hands simultaneously to the extent of my arms' reach.  Though the walls are not square, the other parameters of Symmetrical Procedures remain.  In these drawings I'm using the symmetrical structure of my body to get in touch with how symmetry permeates not only the world around us, but within us as well.  I’m discovering a mirror response between my hands and will be exploring the potential of that in future work.
