Artist Statement

I am endlessly attracted to the undulations, mobilities and lethargies of cloth. Continual arrangement and re-arrangement return my work to the here-and-now, to-and-fro, rock-and-roll of materiality, yours and mine.

In my work draped and folded cloth speaks the language of drawing.  I use this fluid material to delineate formal composition and perform drawing’s capacity for gesture, erasure, replacement, repetition, and contingency.

To me, a drawing remains at once open to revision and reworking, yet decisive and deliberate with an emphatic logic or structure. Placement, mobility and movement of formal and material elements in relation to one another are key aspects of both my working process and completed pieces.

An awareness of this contingency is also vital to the viewing of my work. Through these gestures of arrangement, my work as a form of drawing is perpetually in the present; it reveals itself as paused, able to be otherwise.

Drawing occurs in my work as I use material to work through formal concerns.  Through line, color, shape, overlap, layer, transparency, direction, and composition both between elements within the work and in relation to the larger space around the work, I engage in a dialogue with formal abstraction and late Modernism.

Even as I pay homage to the work of artists such as Mondrian, Kelly and Stella, I manipulate the seductive materiality of stretch fabrics to distort and set in motion the flat expanses of color so revered in Modern abstraction, and place visual inquiry in visceral relation to the body.

I revel in arrangement as a means to re-combine material and pictorial, literal and formal, visceral and ethereal. Reaching back to the endeavours of Modernism, I employ the strategies of formal abstraction to propose intersections between decoration and Modernism, and make palpable the tension between the body and abstraction.
