Artist Statement

My paintings depict the postmodern landscape, where consumer goods are being hemorrhaged from the rock-like skeletal system. Evolution is depicted in the layers of rock, along with the gelatinous collaged pieces used to describe tumors growing exponentially. Images and shards from glossy magazine pages are reassembled to remove the familiar pseudo-event, which took place within advertisements and reposition them into a surrogate image within the drawing.

The land is continuously expanding with only the instruction and direction generated from its own design, resulting in a mutated environment. Codes in both the striations of the landmasses as well as the programmed spectacle from the magazine pages narrate the direction of the landscape. The sites are cultivated from the direction given by the codes embedded in the rock formations.  The codes appear to instruct a random-ness of accumulated images, grouped and in combination with other elements from advertisements.  The randomness coincides with the lack of fluidity and substance within contemporary ads.  Lipstick lids and watch parts are confused and intermixed with architecture. Fabric seems to be covering much of the landscape with totems of spherical shapes growing and toppling over.  Shine and sparkle are everywhere, attempting to attract the attention of, while distracting the viewer/consumer from the disarray of the landscape.  The space presented has an immediate appearance of familiarity, but with a closer examination it is clear that the comfort found in the landscape is from the viewers relationship with media and advertising.
