Artist Statement
In my artwork the flat and the spatial are intertwined within one work. These Room-Drawings emphasize and dismantle the architecture of physical space, in an attempt to re-orientate the perception of an image and a space. I always create the two-dimensional part of a Room-Drawing with and for a specific place. The process of developing a Room-Drawing is comparable with the process of shaping something three-dimenional. The work usually only exists for the limited amount of time of an exhibition, after which it becomes over-painted.

Recently I have concentrated most on the physical appearance of the Room-Drawings. To achieve a more open level of perception and association, I decided to reduce what had been a primarily linear visual language to one based on large scale planar forms, which would react against, follow, describe, and inscribe directions, motions, and rhythms of the space. By doing so, I removed all the elements of the imagery which referred to objects.

In the exhibition space of Fridericianum (Kassel, Germany) I integrated a large-scale architectural intervention: a sloping wall dividing the entire space. In this way I was able to investigate the intertwining of the space-creating potentials of painting, sculpture and architecture in one artwork.

The exclusive use of black and white was meant to emphasise the contrast and coexistence of space and image (fact and fiction) within one work. By using a language of two-dimensional shapes, which are also intrinsic to the perception of space, I was able to achieve the clearest expression of the visual intervention of an image into architecture.

The relation of the visual language used in the Room-Drawing to rhythm, motion and sound forms another basis for my work. I research the fugacious and space-creating qualities of sound in reference to my Room-Drawings. Could a visual intervention transform the experience of a static space, into an experience of implied motion that converges towards that of sound and music?
