Artist Statement

These drawings were made with gouache, ink or watercolor, drawn on large sheets of paper.  All of them were started by drawing one small circle, then another, eventually constructing an overall form.  In a way, you could say that they grew and expanded to an image organically through obsession and labor.  Filled with images of flowers and phallic-looking shapes, they are hyper-feminine and sexual, with hints of humor and awkwardness. Much of my drawing takes as its inspiration artifacts of Neolithic times to the geometric pottery of ancient Greece.  Their simplification of shape and clarity of recognizable imagery are understandable to a point, but then seems to deepen to mystery.  Although there are thousands of years between us, I return to them again and again for guidance. Drawing was my first creative expression as a child and has been with me ever since. I want to expand on conventions of drawing with video and size and create large, imposing statements about fertility, sex, and gender.
