Artist Statement

Statement – Daisy Richardson

The overarching concern of my work is travel, the act of travel to its historical, cultural and social implications, and the idea of the unknown and transformation. Most of my work is informed by drawings made in places around the world from China to the Canadian Arctic. My current practice looks at the interplay between the built and the natural, considering the historical use of buildings as colonial and colonising markers or stakes. I look at the formation of urban societies as a man made equivalent to the geological formation of rocks and mountains. I also consider in some work the end product of the meeting of these two elements; the constructed and the natural, to potentially be environmental catastrophe.

A Journey Around My Room by Xavier de Maistre has been influential to my work; I’m very interested in the idea of a journey in miniature with the expansion of thought and vision coming from within and also of the cyclical journeys of every day life as a form of travel; de Maistre travels from chair to window and pulls mountains into his room in word and thought. Many of my sculptures are constructions of natural forms such as rocks that can only be shown inside, and I often use newspapers, internet printouts, leaflets and magazines in my table top animations. I am trying to show the tension between exterior and interior space and the way in which these communication methods endlessly bring the outside world into the interior domain as unwelcome as it often is. This idea of bringing the outside inside and the ridiculous inherent in that act have become important features of my work.
