Artist Statement
Motivated by human longings for the unattainable and our impulse to explore and to invent - my work explores our ability to imagine, as we emanate outward beyond boundaries of the known and orientate ourselves into yet uncharted territories. My processes in making my sculptures, drawings, and quilts simultaneously contemplates, explores, and represents this phenomenon. These invented objects – at once whimsical and utilitarian – are reflections upon both the physical and emotional aspects of the human subject’s ceaseless endeavor to orient oneself and navigate.

The work entitled 'Mappings', a series of embroidered drawings on linen fabric based on aircraft navigational charts, embody topographic information and densely drawn net-like structures of coordinates, which have been translated into patterns using simple white embroidery stitches. These charts of invisible man-made systems indicating vast spatial relatedness and the profoundly inhuman aerial perspective are made intimate, immediate, and material as they are encoded in hand-sewn quilts that poetically refer to both maps and domestic textiles.

In addition to the view from overhead, I am interested in the representation of the individual’s complete radial view from specific vantage points. With this in mind, I have designed several 'Panorama Drawing Devices'. At once drawing tools, viewing devices and sculptures, these contraptions allow me to complete drawings that are 360° panoramas of the environment and ultimately serve as frames for the display of the finished drawings. Beginning as an initial experiment, I set up my devices in nature, inside my studio or gallery interior and drew the landscape or the built environment around me while inverting the traditional rules of perspective. Currently I am drawing constructed views of nature that are composed from postcards of idealized mountain landscapes and picturesque places. In my panorama drawings, these collaged constructions of disparate places are then re-composed into a single landscape, which is seamless and whole.
