Artist Statement

Picture 1:

In the drawing performance “the human spirograph” the artist worked like the spirograph working sets from the 70ties. With them, you can draw mathematically exact patterns. He tried to work like this tool, and drew various patterns onto the walls in the gallery. Kirschners patterns, in comparison to the exact patterns created with a set, evoke through its inaccuracy, the aspect of humanity.

Pictures 2 - 10:

Manfred Kirschner works on the so called “Kunsttheorieuntersetzer”/“Art Theory Kettle Holder”. This Is the Main Title of his handmade, crocheted drawing series. Based on uni coloured Prototypes he developed a System in which the Drawings seem to face their own will. They began giving up statements by having these materialised on their surface. Logos and images appear in a parallel crocheted drawn world. Kirschner treated the bigger ones like bodies, put them on chairs and sofas in absurd sitting rooms. Later, some of the huge works are even big enough to carry the whole situation itself. In their significance the “Art Theory Kettle Holder” stands, as a spiritual object, for a product of artistic fabrication, where the recipient is able to place meanings and theories on. The work symbolises with its functions as a variable spot, any art product and its interpretation. It investigates the relationship between the artistic role and recipient.

Pictures 11 – 15:

The Larousse Series- This drawing series consists of genealogic Cover Versions after well known famous paintings. Their reproductions are from a common French encyclopaedia named “Larousse pour Tous” from the early 19 century, that was printed before the evolution of photography documentation been raised. The Images were transferred from copper plate prints of an artist called Ch. Kreuzberger. Kirschner choose these very small graphics and blows them up, transformed them into big handmade drawings. In the list of their genealogic transformation, the work itself is about the little inaccuracy that appears in the rank of reproduction following other reproductions.
