Artist Statement

In my art practice I work with issues around displacement, exile, the notion of mobility and transience. My work explores the interdisciplinary format which comprises drawing, sculpture, video and performance. My diverse artistic interests are regularely manifested within an aesthetic parametars of the exhibiting space, in a manner in which it can evoke and convey the main concerns in my work. Those concerns are primarely humanist and political in nature, often examining the results of exile and the side-effects of seeking an effective identity while under the constraints of political and social pressures. My work has been profoundly informed by ny own experience as an emigrant from the Former Yugoslavia, and by desire to speak on behalf of those who share this collective history: the violence of dislocation, the burden of displacement, the energy of exile, the politics of sustaining identity under threat.

Elastic materials which carry with them the inherent quality of being "stretched" are a constant component in my installation, wall drawings, sculptural and performative practice. In this way my work addresses the notion of boundaries and limitations, underlying the need of stretching, reshaping and redefining the roles and confines which are put upon us as a society. By constructing architectural and virtual environments out of 'feminine' materials I aim to create the structures, which are not only flexible, vulnerable and open, but also transitory, impermanent and spiritual in nature. In doing so, I intend to challenge the perception of architecture and constructed environments as embodiment of solidity, power and permanence.
