Artist Statement

If GB's work is to be understood as a medieval kinetic kindergarten then we can understand that a literal linear reading is redundant. Incorporating painting, sculpture, collage, performance and video, his chameleon like change from man/person/artist to deranged actionist highlights the transformative agency in his work. GB's working methods seek to deform his experience of reality as well as to disturb the mimetic representation of the “real”. A scavenger like approach, literally and metaphorically, allows him to pick through the remnants of the history modernism, salvaging ideas from a bygone era like a boho nutcase in well-worn desert boots. The video based works serve as counterpoint as well as evidence of the performance based "DROPPINGS". Video is used as generational, as a tool inside and outside the institution.

A certain kind of absurdist theatre is at play, combinations of obscurity, interlocking narratives and utopian hell are all fighting to be present or could it  be as simple as the act of mark making. As in De Kooning or maybe Morris Louis who subverted the notion of the mark and substituted/replaced it with the pour that becomes a veil and therefore encompassing. GB’s veil is a moo moo and simultaneously evokes a spirit of  boho aesthete and action painter, drunk, deranged, outta control.

If rock’n’roll can be understood through critical dialogue, assessed on its intellectual and performative aspects  by its sonic reverberations, GB's work/performance sits on the cusp of the private act of art making and the extroverted essence of rock'n'roll. Substituting reverb and feedback with poured paint and the mimicked. As with the transgressive nature of the rock'n'roll singer, the singer ascends the everyday in an attempt emphasize futility, pain, pleasure or any other combination of the human emotional state, GB's transgressions are harder to define as singular act, as the heavy reliance on the absurd and the abject cloud reasonable evaluation.
