Artist Statement

In my text work I examine and dissect the word of God by cutting letters from holy books. I deconstruct a text letter by letter, and reassemble it to form another sacred writing. The Koran is turned into the Bible, the Bible is morphed into the Bhagavad Gita, the Torah becomes a Tantric text, and so on. By eliminating punctuation and spaces between words, I discourage a literal reading of the text to reveal the common spiritual thread that weaves through all sacred writings.

The labor-intensive aspect of my work is a meditation practice as well as a form of devotion. A long history in evangelical Christianity formed my core beliefs about God and transcendence, and I was well into adulthood by the time I relinquished the Christian path. I now gravitate toward eastern mysticism, but am deeply moved by Islam and Buddhism. I have profound respect for a person’s chosen belief system, and my work is a celebration of the diverse experiences of spirituality. When stripped of its specificity, religion is an expression of the universal need for connection with something greater than oneself. In the end, the holy word of God may be nothing more than the sublime expression of our shared humanity.
