Artist Statement

Statement

My practice consists of a self-conscious body of research stemming from a particular physical, social, and temporal node, myself, Ryan Park. Beginning from awareness of one's ultimate separateness from others as embodied collectors of data and processors of information, my work is a means of inquiry into the relationships, codes, organizational systems, communicative links and gaps, and intentions that define self and others.

I often make use of the familiar, or the common, as a means of instant, and collective, recognition: to make the work accessible and to frame the complexity of interactions, the desires, assumptions and everyday precepts brought to even the most ordinary of images, objects, and actions. Using a variety of media and processes, my work is propelled by rigorous systems of production and poetic hypothesis.

Work stems from elaborated sketches, small connections that propose avenues for further analysis. Experimental replication and repetition is a common strategy that I employ in my process, a tendency informed by my scientific background. Rather than definitive conclusions, my experiments often lead to perceptual and logical limbo. The mass-produced is confused and conflated with the hand-made, public data with personal, skill with failure, humour with loneliness, ego with insecurity, and art with everyday life. My work is an attempt to give form to, and acknowledge, these disjunctions: to make aware one's self-consciousness and physio-temporal position in the world, to explore the fragility of certainty, and to evoke the sense of wonder and openness that this allows.
