Artist Statement
Artist’s statement Emily Brown

My work arises to a great extent out of my love of the natural landscape. I am intrigued by the challenge of finding and forming a distilled response to experiences outdoors where change is constant, and vulnerable and complex forms abound. This is where I start.
The image serves as a format for exploring materials and marks, seeing what sustenance and meaning might be conveyed through them. Scale, color/temperature, space, movement and texture all resonate with our physical experience. I want the work to be felt physically by viewers, to interest them and to connect to them in a kind of primal or nonverbal sense, so they might sense things in a new way.
