Artist Statement
My work is concerned with exposing the power of accretion and accumulation and the ability of these processes to instigate significant change in our conceptual and physical perception of the world. With an emphasis on recording my actions and activities as well as collecting everyday information and documents the work is process driven. Installations of my work can best be described as accumulated compilations of sound, forms, photographs, and written statements that imply an infinitely ever changing connectedness. I try to attain and offer viewers or experiencers moments of existential expansion through the generation of dense pieces from simple systematic activities.

Artist Bio / CV

In 1980 Charles studied graphic design at the Colorado Institute of Art. In 2000 he received a BFA with an emphasis in art history from Metro State College of Denver. During that time he worked as a custom rug designer for a carpet showroom in Denver and exhibited his paintings with several galleries in the local area. Of these venues he was invited to display in a show called Growth and Decay at the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art, CO. The last exhibition of his paintings was in 2002 at Andenken Gallery, Denver.

In 2004 he received his MFA from the University of Connecticut. During that time he produced a CD of sound works called soundsketches: a compilation of sound for the experiencer and published Accrete: A Compilation of Notes, Diagrams, Drawings, and Journal Entries, a catalog of his working process on file at the MOMA library and Thomas J. Dodd Research Center at UConn. For the next five years he worked at the Philadelphia Museum of Art before moving back to Colorado in 2010.
