Artist Statement
My drawings concentrate on New York City and its architectural landscape. I am drawn to the seemingly endless exploration the city environment provides.
In the drawing Invented Structure, 2008, I was inspired by real estate development and condominiums in Williamsburg. I tried to create an image where the man-made structure appears to grow as artlessly or impulsively as nature itself. The odd projecting steel frame and Frank Stella inspired skyline invokes something between science fiction and reality. I feel this juxtaposition evokes my changing physical world.

I frequently depict large architectural structures as subject. In the drawing Highrise of Homes, I was inspired by the SITE architects’ proposal for an apartment building intended to offer its inhabitants a presence and identity in the typically faceless cityscape.  The SITE plan demonstrates several uniquely designed household units within each of its floors. My version is composed of more generic apartments found in Brooklyn and Queens. Mine is also structurally unstable, uninhabitable and absurd. I consider my adaptation a satire of SITE’s design. My intent was to provoke some analysis for the environment in which structures like this may exist or are called for.

I also love Hip-Hop music. I believe the technique or tradition of looking through seemingly endless amounts of old records and looping audio samples is connected to my imagery or process. It can be seen through the repetitive patterns in my work, and associated with the extensiveness of architectural forms and renewal found in New York.
