The reference to nature and choice of materials in my work opens a platform for reflection on the fragile, transient and exquisite quality of life.
My work evolves as a direct response to the season and landscape and from the tension between beauty and decay, growth, sustainability and entropy.
In my process I am mindful of reducing and reinterpreting waste. I have been exploring the use of low impact pigments and surfaces such as milk paint, black walnut ink, recycled tea bags, reclaimed wood and paper.
The series titled morphogenesis was inspired by the juxtaposition between the lacy beauty and threatening fragility of leaves eaten by Japanese beetles. While referring to the leaves, the pieces also evoke the body, the internal organs, heart, lungs and capillaries. I’m interested in the layered and permeable correlation between the inner and outer ecosystem.
The works, patterned resonance, are delicate interpretive drawings of natural phenomena found on my walks, including the repeated black spot on oak leaves and the wispy remains of a summer vine, rendered with hand prepared black walnut ink. The paper, dense, tactile and soft, is hand made from recycled textile waste in Sanganer, India.
Repeated patterns, for me, give expression to parallels seen in the micro and macro world.
