Artist Statement
I have been interviewing and drawing Iraqi former detainees from Abu Ghraib and other prisons in Iraq. The interviews have taken place in Turkey or Jordan in conjunction with a team of American lawyers representing these men and women in a civil rights violation lawsuit here in the US. More information can be found on my website www. danielheyman.com. I have made over 30 watercolor drawings and 18 drypoint prints. These works are in the collections of many musuems and libraries, including the Library of Congress, The New York Public Library, The Baltimore Museum of Art, and Yale University Art Gallery. One set of the images were painted in an accordion book measuring over 24" x 30' when completely open.
